Moratalla Property Development

In the north-west of Murcia the warm plains give way to more temperate hills and mountains. Nestling some 681 metres above sea level, situated at the base of the Sierra De Los Alamos and amongst extensive pine forests, is the small historic town of Moratalla. Founded in medieval times, the town thrives today as a centre of tourism and agriculture, the region being an important source of apricots, almonds, olives and olive oil, wood and barley. Not far away is the famous rice-growing town of Calasparra. The town commands wonderful views over the surrounding countryside and is dominated by surrounding mountains which reach to twice the height of the peaks we are familiar within the English Lake District.

Moratalla retains the traditional feel of a small Spanish town. The narrow streets and random rooflines bear witness to its medieval roots and long history. The town is dominated by the medieval castle and the church of St. Mary of the Assumption which dates from the 16th century. Even so, the town meets the needs of both visitor and resident today with a new health centre, offering 24 hour emergency cover, a library, a theatre, good shops, a weekly market, a language school, 65 bars and restaurants, chiropodists, dentists, beauty salon, good schools and a well funded sports centre offering a range of activities.  The nearby towns of Caravaca De La Cruz and Cehegin offer more cosmopolitan shopping, larger supermarkets and more established English communities, where book exchanges, English language publications and social activities are readily available. The attractiveness of area has sparked a number of new housing developments around the town but these are being strictly controlled by the town hall authorities and there will be no repeat of the sprawling overdevelopment which has blighted some areas of coastal Spain.

The area boasts great natural beauty making the area a magnet for the discerning tourist. If you enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding or just love beautiful views and a great variety of flora and fauna, you will find yourself drawn to the area around Moratalla and the region of Murcia. Many beautiful walks, springs, reservoirs and forests are just a few minutes from the Moratalla town centre. The stunning Casa De Cristo with adjoining restaurant and superb views and the lavender fields of Campo San Juan are but a short drive away.

Life in Moratalla is characterised by a traditional Spanish way of life which is as easy going and relaxing now as it has been for centuries. Not that the town is lifeless; in addition to the usual social calendar there are two lively fiestas each year, the main one being in July when the centre is overrun by bulls and during Holy Week, a drumming festival which features hand made drums and robes, crafts which have been passed down through the centuries.

Moratalla offers a quietness and peace which is far removed from the bustle of the busy coastal resorts. Even so you can have the best of both worlds as the delights of the beach, airport and the city of Murcia itself are only around one hour of driving time away.

Moratallerans are proud of their town, freely welcome both visitor and new residents and are delighted to offer help and information at every opportunity. Crime is virtually non-existent and the area remains free from many of the problems associated with coastal living, offering a viable choice for those seeking a life-improving change of lifestyle.

Murcia has provided and is predicted to provide the best growth rates in property prices in recent years, registering an annualised growth rate of 10.1% in the third quarter of 2007, compared to 4.2% and 2.1% in the traditionally popular areas of Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca over the same period. Quality properties in all locations and especially away from overdeveloped coastal areas are still enjoying growth considerably above the national average.
